Regional Science Fair Features 76 Projects from Young Scientists

This year’s Annapolis Valley Regional Science Fair featured 76 projects from students in grades P-12 on a wide range of topics, such as innovations to improve our world, data mining, experiments about human behavior and health, and research on the solar system.

The Science Fair took place April 3 to 6, 2018 at NSCC Kingstec Campus. While the science fair welcomes projects from students at all grade levels, students in grades 4 to 12 receive constructive feedback on their projects, and are eligible for prizes and awards. The science fair closed with an evening awards ceremony on April 6 where Regional Executive Director of Education Roberta Kubik presented awards to students whose projects were selected for special honours.

At the awards ceremony, four projects were selected to proceed to the Canada Wide Science Fair:

  • Lucas Hilden, West Hants Middle School
  • Shwetabh Jha, Horton High School
  • Michelle Song, Horton High School
  • William Ahern, Kings Edgehill School

These four students will be among the top 500 young scientists in Canada, competing for nearly $1,000,000 in scholarships and prizes. The Canada Wide Science Fair takes place this year at Carleton University in Ottawa from May 12 to 19.

Congratulations to Lucas, Shwetabh, Michelle and William, and to all student scientists who participated in this year’s Annapolis Valley Regional Science Fair. For a complete list of regional science fair award winners, visit https://sites.google.com/gnspes.ca/avrsf/awards

Special thanks to organizers Christine Bigelow Popowich, Caitlin Mitchell and Rob Davies for their leadership in organizing the regional science fair. Thanks as well to volunteers, sponsors and judges who make this exciting and worthwhile learning opportunity possible for students.
