African Heritage Month 2018

February is African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia. This year's theme, Educate, Unite, Celebrate Community, embraces education and encourages all Nova Scotians with the desire to educate oneself about African Nova Scotian history.

Together, we can unite and ignite the culture and heritage we share as a community as we observe the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent

The province of Nova Scotia has over 50 historic African Nova Scotian communities, dating back over 400 years. For this reason we must educate, unite and celebrate African Heritage Month.

This month and throughout the year, AVRSB schools strive to honour and celebrate the cultural, historic, economic, scientific and social contributions of African Nova Scotians.

Special events in AVRSB this month include the annual African Youth Talent Show on February 21, and a February 7 performance by Rhythms of Life as part of the Annapolis Valley Initiatives in Diversity (AVID) series. All are welcome at both events, which take place at the Horton High School Performance Centre with free admission (freewill offerings or food bank donations appreciated).
