With many schools preparing to welcome students on September 2 to begin the new school year, and given the high temperatures and humidity, we have received some inquiries from parents/guardians about school opening. While there is no directive from the Province or our Health partners to close schools, parents/guardians as always are advised to use their discretion when sending their children to school.
Please note the information below as provided by the Deputy Minister of Education:
Nova Scotia is experiencing unseasonably hot and humid weather this week. The current heat wave has prompted some people to question the wisdom of students returning to school Thursday should temperatures remain this hot.
The Department of Education has been in contact with the Department of Health Promotion and Protection (HPP) for advice on this issue. According to HPP and Environment Canada, the humidex (combination of temperature and humidity) today and tomorrow is expected to go into the 40's across Nova Scotia. While this weather is uncomfortable for most of us, it can pose a risk to certain individuals including infants, pre-schoolers, adults 65 and older, and people with chronic conditions such as lung or heart problems to become ill as a result of high heat and humidity.
There is no province-wide advice or directive to close schools. I urge you to please encourage your principals to closely monitor the conditions in schools and take all common sense steps necessary to ensure the health and safety of students and staff.
Staff and students should stay well hydrated. As well, students should not engage in strenuous physical activity and they should stay indoors or in shaded areas during recess and lunch break.

At their May 5 regular meeting, the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board approved the ten recommendations from the Schools Review process.

Primary Program Registration
|
Registration is currently taking place for the 2010-2011 school year. If parents have questions, they should contact the school serving the area in which they reside.
• A child must have reached his/her fifth birthday on or before December 31, 2010.
• Registration requires the child’s birth certificate and health card at the time of registration.
